Mindset has become a buzz word. The more content mentioning it, the further we get from a tangible definition. So lets establish two key elements about this word. Set-mind. Your mind is set on beliefs. Meaning you have made up your mind at one point based and now it is set that way. Second is that your mind cannot function in the negative. It must be filled with something. Therefore your mind set is the beliefs and thoughts you have in your mind. When stating it like this it makes it easier to see that someone’s mindset can hold them back.
We all know that one person that is always speaking negatively. They are in a rut almost daily. They put others down and kick around bad outcomes all the time. It is not hard to imagine they think negative thoughts throughout the day. It is easy to identify these people, harder to diagnose yourself…
Diagnosing Yourself
Make a conscious effort to write down mantras you say on a weekly bases, either knowingly or unknowingly. What you say out loud comes from inside you, in your core beliefs. In sales it may be simple things that come up in your conversations.
This is usually simpler than trying to meditate on “what am I thinking”, “is this thinking holding me back” etc. When you say it out loud, understand, you believe it deeply!
Pay particular attention to “Money doesn’t grow on trees” type comments. This is a core belief that is linked to a belief that making money is hard. Remember, farmers sell trees.
Alternatively, ask a close friend to be honest with you. Pick a trusted person preferrably one that is “more successful” than you. Could be a peer in sales that has great results. Could be your team lead. The question is:
Hey, I have been doing some self reflection in an effort to improve my performance. I believe that this is tied to my mindset. Are you able to help me identify negative mindsets that I carry or that you think I may carry? I want to rewire my mindset and overthrow beliefs that are holding me back.
How to overthrow
Write down the negative mindset in a sentence
Call out the mindset that you no longer believe it “I no longer believe ….”
Write down what you now believe as your new mindset “I now believe ….”
Write the reasons why in your experience the new mindset is true “because ….”
Find ways to repeat this messaging. Use visuals, audio, written word. The more you hear the new truth the more ingrained it becomes.
