Build Rapport Before You Sell
Most salespeople rush the handshake. They're so eager to get to the pitch that they skip the part that actually makes people buy: trust.
Tony Robbins treats rapport as the foundation of every sale. Not a nice-to-have. Not small talk before the "real" conversation. The real conversation.
Why This Matters
People don't buy from companies. They buy from people they trust. And trust doesn't show up because you had a good slide deck — it shows up because someone took the time to understand what you actually need.
Think about the last time you bought something big. A car. A house. A software tool your whole team depends on. Chances are you didn't say yes to the first person who listed off features. You said yes to the person who got it — who understood your situation before they tried to solve it.
Skip rapport, and even a perfect pitch lands flat. Build it first, and the pitch barely has to work hard at all.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Slow down at the start. Resist the urge to jump into your offer in the first five minutes. Let the conversation breathe.
Ask real questions. Not "how's business" small talk — ask about what's actually keeping them stuck, what they've tried before, what a win looks like for them.
Listen more than you talk. Rapport isn't built by being interesting. It's built by being interested.
Mirror their energy and language. If they're direct, be direct. If they're detail-oriented, don't rush past the details.
None of this is a trick. It's just paying attention to another human being before asking them for something.
Thing to Do Now
In your next sales conversation, set a rule for yourself: no pitching in the first ten minutes. Spend that time entirely on questions and listening. See how different the rest of the call feels.
Thing to Plan
Build a short rapport checklist you run through before every pitch — three or four things you want to genuinely understand about the prospect (their goals, their pain points, what's worked or failed before) before you say a word about your product.
Thing to Never Forget
Trust is built before the pitch, not during it. If the rapport isn't there, no amount of polish on your offer will make up for it.
